Trump Urges Orban to Reconsider Ukraine’s EU Aspirations
(MENAFN) On Tuesday, a news agency disclosed that U.S. President Donald Trump reached out to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban to discuss his continued resistance to Ukraine’s integration into the European Union.
This phone call reportedly followed a series of meetings at the White House on Monday involving Trump, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and various European dignitaries.
According to the media outlet, European representatives asked Trump to use his rapport with Orban to persuade him to withdraw his opposition to Ukraine's EU accession.
Sources familiar with the talks told the news agency that this outreach was part of a broader diplomatic strategy to unify support for Ukraine’s future in Europe.
During the call, Hungary reportedly indicated an openness to facilitate forthcoming peace talks between Russian President Vladimir Putin and President Zelenskyy.
While Trump acknowledged that a summit between the two leaders would take place, he mentioned that a venue for the meeting was still under discussion.
In a public statement posted Tuesday on the American social networking platform Facebook, Orban confirmed receiving the appeal but stood firm on his position.
"Ukraine's membership in the European Union does not provide any security guarantees," he stated. "Therefore linking membership with security guarantees is unnecessary and dangerous."
