Pakistan’s top court allows bail to imprisoned Ex-Prime Minister
(MENAFN) Pakistan’s Supreme Court on Thursday approved bail for former Prime Minister Imran Khan, who is currently behind bars, in several cases connected to the attacks on military facilities that took place in May 2023, according to reports.
The decision came from a three-judge panel led by Chief Justice Yahya Afridi, which overturned a ruling by the Lahore High Court that had earlier denied Khan’s requests for bail in eight separate cases linked to the unrest of 2023.
The court instructed that the 72-year-old leader should be freed, provided he is not being detained under any other charges.
Despite the ruling, Khan will not walk free, as he is still serving a sentence following a conviction in a corruption case.
Khan, a former cricket star turned political figure, continues to face a large number of legal battles, from graft charges to terrorism-related accusations, which he dismisses as a "sham."
A number of his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) colleagues, including opposition figures in both chambers of parliament, have also recently been convicted under similar circumstances.
The unrest in question erupted in May 2023, when Khan’s brief arrest on corruption allegations triggered widespread protests. Demonstrators stormed several military facilities, including the country’s General Headquarters in Rawalpindi.
