Germany refuses entry of over than ten thousand immigrants on boarder
Alexander Dobrindt, a close ally of Chancellor Friedrich Merz, told the weekly Stern magazine that stricter border measures have been effective and that the government intends to continue them beyond September. “We have turned away over 10,000 illegal migrants at our borders since May 8, including approximately 550 asylum seekers. It has become known that it no longer makes a difference at the border, which is also why asylum applications are declining," he said.
Dobrindt added that the measures have been “highly effective” and have altered global perceptions, signaling that Germany’s migration policy has changed. “To continue this success, we will be extending these controls beyond September. All measures are within the bounds of national and European law,” he said.
Germany, the EU’s largest economy, currently hosts about 3.5 million refugees, mainly from Ukraine, Syria, and Afghanistan. During the February election campaign, Chancellor Merz’s Christian Democrats promised strict measures to curb irregular migration, and following the coalition’s formation in May, Germany introduced enhanced border controls with neighboring EU countries.
The controls have strained relations with Poland, prompting Warsaw to implement temporary reciprocal border measures last month. Polish officials have accused Germany of pushing migrants into Polish territory. Under EU rules, temporary border controls within the Schengen zone are allowed only in exceptional circumstances, such as serious threats to public order, and the European Commission has stressed that such measures must remain a “last resort” and strictly temporary.
