The tremor, which occurred at 2:56 a.m. local time (0956 GMT), was centered just over 1.6 kilometers (1 mile) east-southeast of Berkeley. The earthquake hit at a shallow depth of 8 kilometers (5 miles), making it noticeable to people in surrounding areas, including the major cities of San Francisco and San Jose.
Despite the noticeable tremor, authorities have confirmed that no tsunami has been triggered by the seismic event. The US National Tsunami Warning Center issued a statement indicating that no tsunami threat is anticipated as a result of the earthquake.
