Syria joins Global Coalition in political collaboration to combat ISIS
According to al-Mustafa, “The agreement is political and until now contains no military components,” he said on the social media platform X.
The announcement came as Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa met with U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House in what al-Mustafa described as a “warm, candid, and forward-looking” meeting lasting more than an hour.
He quoted Trump as saying: “You have done a great job — you have our support,” noting that the discussions centered on expanding bilateral economic cooperation, attracting U.S. investment into Syria, and lifting sanctions imposed under the Caesar Act.
Trump also reaffirmed Washington’s commitment to supporting Syria’s recovery, stating: “We have to get this done — we have to help Syria.”
Al-Mustafa said the talks included discussions about incorporating the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) into the national army to “unify state institutions and ensure lasting stability.”
During the talks, Trump reportedly “expressed his support for a potential security arrangement with Israel, aimed at enhancing national and regional stability.”
He added that Washington formally announced the reopening of the Syrian Embassy in the U.S. capital, ending more than ten years of diplomatic suspension.
Following the meeting, Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio held a follow-up session to outline an executive roadmap for implementing the agreed commitments, emphasizing “both sides’ seriousness and commitment to tangible progress.”
Reports noted that President Sharaa’s visit — lasting nearly two hours of talks with Trump and senior U.S. officials — was the first by a Syrian head of state to the White House since Syria’s independence almost 80 years ago.
