Sudanese civilians flee RSF attacks on foot
“The citizens who were forcibly displaced from El-Fasher, Bara, and Al-Nahud did not go to Nyala or Al-Fula or to any area under militia control in Darfur's cities or West Kordofan,” Burhan said on social media platform X.
He emphasized that the displaced “chose to walk thousands of kilometers to areas under state and government forces' control, where they find security and the essentials of life.”
Last month, the RSF captured El-Fasher, North Darfur’s capital, and committed massacres, according to reports from local and international organizations. Observers have warned that the assault could solidify Sudan’s geographical division.
The International Organization of Migration reports that nearly 89,000 people have been displaced from El-Fasher and surrounding areas since last month, with total internal displacement exceeding 10 million.
Of Sudan’s 18 states, the RSF now controls all five in the Darfur region, except for some northern areas of North Darfur still held by the army. Meanwhile, the Sudanese army retains control over most of the remaining 13 states, including the capital, Khartoum.
Since April 15, 2023, the Sudanese army and RSF have been engaged in a war that regional and international mediation efforts have failed to resolve, resulting in thousands of deaths and the displacement of millions.
