US Rejects Russian Proposal on Iran’s Enriched Uranium Transfer—Kremlin

(MENAFN) Russia has claimed that the United States turned down a proposal to transfer Iran’s highly enriched uranium as part of a diplomatic effort to address the ongoing conflict, according to remarks attributed to a senior Kremlin official.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that President Vladimir Putin had suggested the idea earlier as a potential solution, describing it as “a very good solution” that Washington ultimately declined. He added that Russia would be prepared to revisit the proposal if all involved parties agreed.

The issue of Iran’s enriched uranium stockpile remains central to U.S. demands in negotiations aimed at ending the conflict that began on Feb. 28. The material, estimated at roughly 450 kilograms enriched to 60%, is believed to be stored at nuclear facilities that were previously targeted during US-Israeli strikes. U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has said Iran would either surrender the stockpile voluntarily or face other measures to ensure its removal.

Peskov also rejected claims that the war was justified on nuclear grounds, stating that the International Atomic Energy Agency had not found evidence that Iran was developing a nuclear weapon, and arguing that such accusations were being used “as a pretext for aggression.”

When asked about possible Russian involvement, including intelligence or logistical support for Iran, Peskov denied any participation, saying: “Russia is not taking part in this. It is not our war.”

Separately, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has said Russia has provided Iran with support “in many different directions,” though he did not specify whether this included intelligence related to U.S. operations.
